Digitial Spectrum MF 8120SW Wireless Digital Frame Review
I’m not sure where to start with this review. I still have not got the wireless area of this frame figured out. I think there is an issue with my network and how I need to configure the router to talk to this frame. Look for an update on this review when I get that (if) I figure it out. That said, I for those look for ease of use, I’m not sure if this is the right frame.
PROS– The frame come with a lengthy owners manual and software to help you put together slide shows that can be played on the frame. The owners manual gives a very straight forward, easy to follow setup guide for the non-wireless setup of the frame. There is even a section on “optimizing images for display on the memory frame.” I have not seen this before in an owners manual. The picture quality is excellent and the picture transfer process with the USB connection is seamless.
CONS– Unlike most digital photo frames, this frame does not come with memory card readers. I suppose that’s OK, because your supposed to be able to send pictures wirelessly from your computer, photo sharing websites or email to the frame. It was frustrating not to be able to quickly plug pictures into the frame (a method I use most often). I’m also very frustrated with the wireless set-up. The wireless connection is achieved via a D-Link DWL-122 Wireless USB adapter. This plugs into a USB port on the back of the frame. Unfortunately the adapter comes with a CD, but no instructions on how to set it up. The owners manual assumes you already have the wireless adapter functioning properly. At this point I’m trying to figure out if it’s there is a problem with the D-Link adapter or a problem with my router configuration, or both.
UPDATE– The key to setting this up is to get the correct SSID or Wireless Network Name for your router. You may need to access the router’s setup page if you have forgotten the name. Once you have the corrected SSID in the Digital Spectrum software the wireless settings work fine.
